The Bale of his existence

It's taken twenty years, but my friend Harrison Cheung finally got some payback for his tireless efforts promoting an unknown actor named Christian Bale. Here's his story in England's Daily Mail.

The funny thing about this article is that there are lots of misquotes. The writer wanted to focus on why the Evil One (look up 'bale' in the dictionary, dear readers) is so moody. Victim of divorce? Victim of child star syndrome? Whatever. He was raised to believe he could do no wrong. Consquently, his family and his former best friend (me) suffered. I'm just glad that his bad behavior is now public knowledge.

To be quite honest, I don't think this article does your friend any favors, which may have been the reporter's intention. The first time I came across the article, it seemed to portray him as a whiny hanger-on who got kicked to the curb and was using this time to air out some dirty laundry. And I'd have been willing to believe it too (controversy abounds in the comments at http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt

However, if you're really willing to vouch for him, I really might have to think this over again. I mean, it might be better to believe him over a sea of lovesick fangirls/guys on the Internet, haha.

To Faith.... getting interviewed about an actor is a no win situation. If I'm pro-him, I'm a fan. If I'm against, I'm a disgruntled former employee. I think you're going to get a more real picture from a former employee than a lovesick fan. Part of the marketing I did to launch his career was to connect his Internet fan base to the sizable Batman fans when they were casting for the movie. It was a smart, calculated campaign which yielded the desired result - he won the role. Second place? My other client, Jake Gyllenhaal. Anyway, I frankly am not concerned about fan criticism because either I remain silent and the public buys his public image, or I get an opportunity like this to speak my mind. It's a shame the press hasn't been able to corner his stepmother, Gloria Steinem, and ask her, "under what circumstances is it justified to assault your mother and your sister?" No matter what you think of the press coverage of Bale's alleged assaults, my point (and relief) has been that hints of his true nature, character and personality are revealed. It's something I put up with for years and is a validation of sorts.

Faith, for what it's worth, I've known Harrison for more than 20 years, and I heard his Christian Bale stories as they were happening... the bottom line is, he was being kind in that article. If he wanted to, he could tell you stories that would make your toes curl. They made mine.

Thanks for the insight, Harrison. It's a shame what a circus this whole media business can become, but I guess that's entertainment.
